Connect ChatGPT ​

You need a Subtext account that has finished onboarding, and the Google account you signed up with. Connecting never creates a Subtext account; if you don't have one yet, sign up in the app first.

ChatGPT's menus change from time to time, and the options you see depend on your plan and on settings your workspace admin controls. The steps below describe where things are in general terms; if a label differs on your screen, look for the equivalent.

Add Subtext ​

From ChatGPT's directory ​

Once Subtext is listed in ChatGPT's directory of apps and connectors:

  1. Open ChatGPT's Settings and go to the section for apps or connectors.
  2. Find Subtext and choose to connect it.
  3. When ChatGPT asks you to sign in, choose Google and use the same Google account you use for Subtext.

By URL, before the listing is available ​

Until Subtext is listed, you can add it yourself by its address. ChatGPT currently puts adding a connector by URL behind developer mode:

  1. In ChatGPT's Settings, open the connectors (or apps) section and its advanced options, and turn on developer mode. On a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace an admin may need to allow this first.

  2. Choose to add, or create, a connector.

  3. Name it Subtext and paste this URL:

  4. Choose OAuth as the authentication method if ChatGPT asks.

  5. Save, then sign in with the Google account you use for Subtext when the sign-in window opens.

Developer mode is a ChatGPT setting, not a Subtext one. It exists so people can add connectors that aren't in the directory; Subtext behaves the same either way.

Use it in a chat ​

Connectors are switched on per chat. In a new chat, open the tools or + menu in the message box and make sure Subtext is selected. Then ask something about your work, such as "What am I working on at the moment?"

ChatGPT shows each tool call as it happens. For a write (recording a decision, renaming a page, linking two pages) it may ask you to confirm first; that confirmation comes from ChatGPT, and you can approve it or not.

What ChatGPT reads ​

ChatGPT doesn't load skills. Everything it knows about working with Subtext comes from two things Subtext sends when you connect:

  • The server instructions: a short set of rules that tell the model to call brief once at the start, read before asking, treat an empty result as "not in the context I can see" rather than "doesn't exist", record durable facts without asking, and end a reply with one line naming what it used.
  • The tool descriptions: a description of each of the ten tools, what it returns and when to use it.

These carry the same rules as the Subtext skill in a shorter form, so ChatGPT should behave much like Claude does. The skill adds more detail on choosing tools and writing good updates, which is why Claude users are asked to install it.

What to expect on first use ​

  • ChatGPT calls brief early in the chat and uses it as background rather than reciting it.
  • It searches or reads your graph when a question touches a person or project.
  • A reply that used your Subtext context ends with a single line such as "Subtext supplied context about the Harbour project and Priya."
